Teach Like a Pirate Book Study and Giveaway!
Due to some unforeseen events we’re having to wrap up our book study a little earlier. I don’t want to leave you hanging so I’m going to give you a brief recap and finish up the book study in this post.
Before we get started I just have to say this has been an unbelievably fabulous journey and I’m so excited that I got to share it with you all! I want to give a shout-out and sincerest thanks to: Lisa Ann Tani, Sebrina Burke, Lauren Norris, Melissa Ewell Green, Andrea Crawford, Jennifer Kimbrell, and Krista Mahan.
We set up our weekly book study by hosting three chapters a week and linked together for one big party on Sunday!
Dave Burgess does a fantastic job breaking this book down into three parts making it a quick, easy read. The best kind, right? I’m going to do something similar and make this a three part post so I hope you follow along! Today, Monday and Tuesday. And don’t tell but I have a little surprise for Tuesday (shhhh)...
Part I: Passion, Immersion, Rapport, Ask And Analyze, Transformation, Enthusiasm
P- Passion: FInd a way to be passionate about all the content you teach (whether you like it or not). If you don’t like the particular subject or lesson pull from your personal passions; “take charge of the content”, and “light yourself on fire with enthusiasm!
I-Immersion: Are you a lifeguard or a swimmer? Do you set in your stand and watch from above or do you get in the water with your students?
R- Rapport: Genuinely getting to know your students. Make your room a safe environment. Allow your students to take ownership of the environment. While he doesn’t specifically say he’s using whole brain teaching he does and it comes out in his explanations in this chapter. If you’re unfamiliar, check it out here.
A- Ask and Analyze Questions: This chapter is a good one on the questions we ask ourselves when we are planning. Are we taking our questions and reflections to the next level? Are we making sure our students are engaged and working as independently as possible?
T- Transformation: Are you a purple cow or a brown cow? Does your classroom standout among the rest?
E- Enthusiasm: Did you know you can change your your physical and emotional state with enthusiasm! Yes, it is that Powerful!

I can't link up since I've been getting a child ready for college, teaching summer school, and working with my own child (with special needs), but I will say I LOVED reading this post. I love reflecting on how I can bring some piracy into my classroom as we move on to a new year. I started setting up my room and making some new things to set the stage for learning. My first priority is to continue making a cozy reading nook and place for kids to enjoy reading. I went with an animal theme last year...Getting Wild About Reading, and I'll stick with that for this year since I have a fair amount of $$ invested. Anyway, I appreciate your efforts with this, Tara, and I will be back tomorrow. :-)
